White Balance is the process of removing unrealistic color casts, so that the objects which appear white in person are rendered white in your photo. Proper camera white balance has to take into account the color temperature of a light source, which refers to the relative warmth or coldness of white light. Our eyes are very good at judging what is white under different light sources, but digital cameras often have a great difficulty with auto white balance (AWB)- and can create unsightly blue, orange, or even green color casts, there by improving your photos under a wider range of lightning conditions.
Here is an example i found this just basically describes and shows you what white balance is and what it does to an image you took.
Here are my examples what i took using different colored lighting to give you an idea of how white balance works with similar pictures or the same picture. As you can see i have a picture with light and another one with out any light being used.
